I’ve been thinking a lot this week about creating Zen breaks throughout the day. Checking my past “take a break” posts, I came across one from 2014, written at this time of year.-Take a Zen Break Lots of good ideas, but figured after 12 years it could use a bit of a refresh.
First thing in the morning, instead of reaching for my cell phone to check messages etc. I make a cup of tea and walk around the house. The warmth of the cup in my hands is comforting and makes it easier to tackle the day. For my sons, the morning act of making coffee is a Zen art form unto itself. Whatever you choose to do, make it a mindful moment free of electronics.
During the day, I periodically smell braided sweet grass that was given to me by a local Indian. Part of it is the smell alone, but it always makes me think of this woman’s generosity. It’s calming. I also keep stones I’ve gathered from the beach. While they no longer smell like the ocean, they are good reminders, particularly on days when it’s below zero here in Vermont, of my favorite place to relax and zone out. Engaging the senses can not only help one be more mindful, but it can help with relaxation and reducing anxiety.
Zen Exercise: I’m a big fan of Qigong, but there are things like Zen Swing, which feels like a whole body meditation.
Sleep: When I wake up at 2 am, I listen to Zen for sleeping and I find it helps me fall back asleep. Sometimes I learn something useful before I drift back off to sleep.
I keep paper and pen on my desk and create zentangles Some I’ve turned into cards. It’s just doodling with intent.
