One of the longest running characters in television, theater and film, Dame Edna was played by the Australian actor Barry Humphries who died recently at the age of 89. Dame Edna appeared for over seven decades, starting out as a dowdy Mrs. Norm Everage, who first took to the stage in Humphries' hometown of Melbourne in the mid-1950s.
